Bible Prophecy and Probability

What is it that makes the Bible so special and unique? Is it the many stories of the people found within it's pages? Or is it the many words of wisdom given from on high? Well, we will show you that what makes this book so unique are the many prophecies contained within it. Not only that, but the fact that these prophecies have actually occured to the exact letter, shows that the Bible is truly an inspired book by a power far greater than any mortal man. That power being our Creator God in heaven. And below we will show you the probability of Bible prophecy being fulfilled just as it has been.

There are approximately 2500 prophecies contained in the Bible of which around 2000 of them have already been fulfilled.

Now obviously we only have the space and time to show you a few of them and the probability of these actually occuring. Please note that the probability numbers given are from SECULAR scientists, not Christians. And the facts are from actual historical records, not just from the Bible. So let's take a look at the probability of Bible prophecy.

Bible Prophecy of Christ Jesus

There are over 125 Bible prophecies concerning Christ Jesus in the Bible, and even though ALL of the prophecies proclaiming Christ as the Messiah have been fulfilled exactly to the letter, we will just look at 4 of them and the probability of them being fulfilled by Jesus.

PROPHECY 1 - Daniel 9:25-26 ...'Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.'

This prophecy was given through the prophet Daniel around the year 500BC, and it states that the Messiah would be revealed 483 years (69 prophetic weeks) after the decree to restore Jerusalem. This Bible prophecy also states that the Messiah would be "cut off", which means to be killed, after the 483 years. The command to restore Jerusalem was issued in 457BC by Artaxerxes, and if we take off the 483 years that was prophecied in Daniel, we come to AD27, which was the year Jesus was baptized. Then, as the prophecy states, after this He would be "cut off", but not for Himself. This portrays the crucifixion of Christ. For further detail of this prophecy, see 70 weeks of Daniel.

PROPHECY 2 - Micah 5:2 ...'But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.'

This prophecy was given around 700BC and Micah named the tiny village of Bethlehem as the birth place of the Messiah. This is the most widely known and celebrated occasion in history. This was fulfilled exactly by Christ Jesus.

PROPHECY 3 - Zechariah 11:12-13 ...'And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.'

This prophecy was given in the 5th century BC, declaring that the Messiah would be betrayed for the price of a slave, 30 pieces of silver. And also that this money would end up being used to buy a burial ground ("cast them to the potter"). This was fulfilled exactly, as Judas was paid 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus into the hands of the Pharisees. But Judas ended up rejecting the money and it was used to buy the "potter's field" just as predicted.

PROPHECY 4 - Psalm 22:1,8,16,18 ...'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? ... He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him ... they pierced my hands and my feet ... They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.'

Psalm 34:20 ...'He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.'

Zechariah 12:10 ...'And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced.'

This was prophesied about 400 years before crucifixion was even invented. Not only that, take a look at what they said about what would happen. "My God, My God", this is what Jesus said as He hung on the cross. "Pierced hands and feet", which depicted the type of death, ie, on the cross. "They cast lots for His garments", which is what the people did with Jesus' clothes. "Not one of His bones broken", this actually went against the custom of crucifixion, but it was perfectly fulfilled by Christ as they did not break His bones because He died so quickly, instead they pierced His side with a sword.

Now as we said, there are over 125 Bible prophecies concerning Christ in the Old Testament, and yet look at the probability of just the above 4 being fulfilled in one man. If you put all of the Bible prophecies together, then the probability of them happening in just one man would be impossible. But they WERE fulfilled in Christ Jesus, because the prophecies were inspired by God Himself, who sees the end from the beginning. Just to give you an example, the probability of Jesus Christ fulfilling just EIGHT of the Bible prophecies concerning Him would be 1 in 10,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000. And this number just keeps on growing and growing as you add more prophecies to the list. The Bible is truly the Word of God.

Other Old Testament Prophecies

PROPHECY 1 - Isaiah 44:28 ...'That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.'

Isaiah 45:1,13,14 ...'Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut. I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts. Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine.'

This Bible prophecy proclaims that a king named Cyrus would destroy the then thought impregnable Babylon, and subdue Egypt along with the rest of the known world. Isaiah also prophesied that this same man, Cyrus, would let the Jewish people in exile go free without any payment. This prophecy was made 150 years before Cyrus was born, 180 years before Cyrus performed any of these things and 80 years before the Jews were taken INTO exile. History shows that Cyrus performed all these things.

PROPHECY 2 - Isaiah 13:17-22 ...'Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eyes shall not spare children. And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there. But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there. And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.'

Jeremiah 51:26 ...'And they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but thou shalt be desolate for ever, saith the LORD.'

Babylon, a glorious prosperous empire, was 196 miles square, enclosed by a moat and a double wall which was 330 feet high, each part being 90 feet thick and believed to be indestructable. Yet these two Bible prophets proclaimed it's doom. Not only that, they prophesied that the city would never again be inhabited by people, only beasts. And that it's stones would not even be moved for use elsewhere. This was fulfilled exactly and Babylon has laid in ruins since the time of it's destruction.

PROPHECY 3 - Jeremiah 49:15-20 ...'For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised among men. Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD. Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof. As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it. Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me? Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.'

Jeremiah prophesied that the land of Edom, which today is in Jordan, despite it's fertility and it's great water supply, would become a baron uninhabited land. His description acurately tells the history of that now uninhabited region.

Truly the Word of God

We have showed you just a few Bible prophecies that in themselves would practically be impossible to happen exactly as stated by chance. And yet there are well over 2000 prophecies contained in this great book. Put them all together and you have IMPOSSIBLE probability of chance. But yet THEY HAPPENED EXACTLY!!

Nowhere in the world can we find such acurately predicted future events that come to pass exactly to the letter. How would these mere humans know these things unless they were inspired by a supernatural power, revealing these future events? The Bible in so many places indicates that it is of divine origin, and all the prophecies contained in it are PROOF of that divine hand. To argue with this would be a denial of clear historical FACTS.

Study the Word for yourself, accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour and you will find LIFE!
